YDA138 class D Power Amplifier

Dangerous.
I got my Tax statement and it is a refund. DO NOT SPEND IT!
But hey can it hurt to look around?
First I checked up on a couple of LPs I have been thinking about. I want a copy of Joan Baez "Diamonds and Rust". Back in Uni my audio buddy and I listened to that one a lot. It was his copy. I still remember the sound. I want one of my own to listen too with my current system.
On his old system ARC SP3a1 preamp, HK Citation 12 amp, Advent speakers (there was only one model). It was warm and rich and resonant. There was this one cut I remember an amazing piano sound with that LP.
The other LP is maybe perhaps a gourmet copy of Famous Blue Raincoat by Jennifer Warnes. I have two copies of consumer grade pressings. There are some old ones kicking about. IMPEX made one of those fancy box issues which costs three digits and even though I really like the record that is too much money.
I found a less fancy Impex issue, but it is sold out. Discogs has some but..... Damn what the market can bear is quite a lot sometimes.
OK lets just check out the CAM listings. No duty and usually no tax, but shipping can be a bitch for heavy stuff. I seem to like stuff that is heavy. Hey there are some interesting amplifiers.
This one caught my eye.
Tumblr media
It is a Pioneer M 25. Dual mono check, that is good. It looks really cool to me. It is 150 Watts full tilt, but is high bias and runs Class A up to a few Watts. She is very handsome to me. It is not very unreasonable at just over $1k, but from a dealer that promises free shipping coast to coast from Ontario. (That is at least $100 bucks). It was a statement amp for Pioneer back in the day. Really tempting, mostly because of the look, dammit.
Oh it's harmless to keep looking right.
Just look for amplifiers under $1100 and there are hundreds. (No tube amps worth looking at that price for sure)
Oh, what is this?
Tumblr media
These are Audio Research DS450s. 450 Watt per channel stereo. The owner used them mono into the second ugliest speakers I ever saw. He wants $4700 for the pair original cost $18k. So one for $2350? They are solid state. According to ARCDB they are quasi Class D? That is interesting from a technical perspective.
The ARCDB description notes the power supply is conventional linear with big transformers and Capacitors. I doubt those tiny class D amps can actually work as I do not see how small switching power supplies can put out enough amps. I mean the wires are tiny too. Normal speakers need amps more than volts to work right. But here the output circuit is high current switching. And ARC brags they make everything in house rather than buy "modules" from you know where. So efficient, and ampere heavy.
Too damn expensive for this human, but I am intrigued. Leave it to ARC to avoid the Switching Power supply and have a heavy and expensive iron hunk in the front. I think that is confirmation that of my suspicion there is a fundamental flaw in Class D tiny amps.
I find it amazing the price on much of this stuff. I mean it is just for a stereo after all.
I also find it amazing that reviewers spew so much ignorance about the stuff they criticize. Regarding the big ARC I read a man who praised all the other amps ARC made as "Class A". Obviously confusing the type of circuit with some "class" of quality. He also thought that the aluminum case was for shielding RFI from getting into the amp, but with 400khz switching frequency, it was probably shielded to keep stuff in.
It is fun to explore the listings. I have found treasure from time to time.

It's important to know what is going on.
Written by US Senator Chris Murphy (D - CT)
Tumblr media
Report from the Senate Floor:
Last night in the Senate, something really important happened. Republicans forced us to debate their billionaire bailout budget framework. We started voting at 6 PM because they knew doing it in the dark of night would minimize media coverage. And they do not want the American people to see how blatant their handover of our government to the billionaire class is.
So I want to explain what happened last night and what we did to fight back. The apex of Republicans’ plan to turn over our government to their wealthy cronies is a giant tax cut for billionaires and corporations. And they plan to pay for it with cuts to programs that working people rely on. Popular and necessary programs like Medicaid, Medicare, and SNAP, are all being targeted.
In order to pass the tax cut, Republicans have to go through a series of procedural steps. Last night, they took the first step which requires them to pass an outline of their plan, but with it, any senator can offer as many amendments as we want. So my Democratic colleagues and I did just that.
Now, we knew that Republicans would largely unanimously oppose them, but we had two objectives here. One, Republicans were forced to put their opinion on record — many for the first time — on the most corrupt parts of Trump and Musk’s agenda. Two, as I’ve been saying, I am going to make every process and procedure as slow and painful as possible for as long as my colleagues choose to ignore the constitutional crisis happening before our eyes.
So what did we propose? We proposed no tax cuts for anyone who makes a billion dollars a year. We made them vote on whether or not Elon Musk and DOGE should have limitless access to Americans’ personal data. We made them vote on whether to protect IVF and require insurers to cover it. Every single amendment Democrats proposed was shot down. On almost every single amendment, Republicans universally opposed it. Every Republican voted against our proposal to prevent more tax cuts for billionaires. The corruption and theft is happening in the open here.
The whole game for Republicans is taking your money and giving it to the wealthiest corporations and billionaires — even if it means kicking your parents out of a nursing home or turning off Medicaid for the poorest children. They know what they are doing is deeply unpopular. They are offering a tax cut to the most wealthy that is 850 times larger than what they are offering working people. Oh and by the way, any tax cuts for working people are going to be washed out by higher costs for basic necessities, like health care and food. It’s a fundamental injustice.
Thanks to your pressure and support, many of my Democratic colleagues have joined my effort to do everything we can to make sure they cannot destroy democracy and steal your money in the dark of the night. We are being loud about what is happening. I’m going to continue to grind the gears of Congress down as much as possible to make it that much harder and slower to get away with this corruption. That’s why the votes lasted until nearly 5 AM.
This is a five-alarm fire. I don’t think we have two years to plan and fight back. I think we have months. It’s still in our power to stop the destruction of our democracy with mass mobilization and effective opposition from elected officials. So we can’t miss any opportunity to take advantage of opportunities to put Republicans on the record and shine a light on what is happening.
And you have a role to play in this as well. I need you to amplify what’s happening, support the leaders who are fighting for you to make sure they can continue speaking truth to power against Musk and Trump’s billionaire cronies, and show up at rallies and town halls. Use every tool at your disposal to send a message loud and clear about how you expect my colleagues to lead and fight in this moment.
Every best wish,
US Senator Chris Murphy (D - CT)

Giving a talk at the electronics hackers convention about hacking two different yet similar devices: smart sex toys and Bluetooth speakers.
You see, they both are made with many of the same components! 18650 batteries, ESP32 or Nordic Semi nRF microcontrollers, USB charging. You just plug a motor drive+vibration motor on the end, or you plug in a class-D amplifier chip and some speakers. But like 80% of the device is the same, we just put them in differently shaped cases.
It's at this point I pause to let these facts sink in.
And in the silence, the audience can finally hear it: a soft and muffled playback of Never Gonna Give You Up, coming from the stage.

•─────•°•❀•°•──── ᴅᴜᴍʙᴀꜱꜱ ────•°•☁︎•°•────•
You know the feeling when you’ve been working so hard that when you finally take a break, it feels wrong?
That’s how you felt- right now- staring at the towering resort in front of you.
You were more than grateful for the effort the school put in to accumulate the funding for a beach trip for the entire hero course- something the other courses envied you all for, and in all honesty, you would gladly give up your spot for any one of them. It was your third year, a stressful time given that you were about to become fully fledged heroes by the time you all graduated in a few weeks – something you found ironic since you and your classmates have already seen more action than the average pro hero.
Though the circumstances were a little different for you, as you had joined the hero course later in the school year following Hitoshi Shinso, who joined Class 1-B. You were put in Class 1-A to keep the classes balances, allowing your dream to come true to become a pro alongside the others.
Your quirk, Eviscerate, let you release powerful blasts of pure kinetic energy that could destroy, explode and burn. Though while it was no doubt powerful, it was unstable, and dangerous. When you first got your quirk, you destroyed half of your home while sleeping, and the following doctors appointment suggested getting you a permanent support equipment that would act as a muzzle on your quirk to keep in contained.
However the company that supplied the gear was unreliable and neutralized your quirk to the point where it was practically useless. From then on, you used gear to amplify your quirk instead of restrict it, and yet, though the blasts had the same effects they used to, they would sap large chunks of your energy the more powerful the blast was, which is why you passed out after taking out 7 robots during the entrance exam and ended up enrolling in General Studies, despite your potential.
Once you managed to get into the hero course, you were paired with train with a certain Bakugou Katsuki, who was quite experienced in the explosions department and helped you develop your special moves. Bakugou pushed you to not only become a better hero but a better person, yelling at you to take care of yourself and scolding you if you didn’t drink enough water when you felt dizzy after training.
You two had grown considerably close due to that, and you felt more comfortable within Class 1-A, never feeling left out despite your late arrival.
And to be honest, you couldn’t help but harbor some feelings for the blonde too.
Now, here you were, standing in front of one of the most luxurious beachside resorts in all of Japan.
Dragging your suitcase and backpack, you gather in the lobby alongside your classmates, awaiting Aizawa Sensei’s instructions.
The ravenette in question pulled out his phone and starts to read out the sleeping arrangements.
“Ashido and Hagakure, Shinso and Tokoyami, Midoriya and Todoroki, Asui and Uraraka...” he drones on monotonously, and your brain subconsciously started to tune him out until a pair of names catches your attention.
“L/N and Bakugou.”
Almost everyone whips their heads in your direction, and your face turns bright red.
Bakugou?!
***
Your mind races a million miles a minute. I’m sharing a room with Bakugou?! Shit- what if I’m a bad roommate?! What if he thinks I’m gross! I’m going to have to scrub myself clean every hour now. Damn it I didn’t bring enough body wash to wash every hour of the week. You mentally groan to yourself.
You see Bakugou heft his bags, grabbing his room key from Aizawa, and you want to melt into the floor. How in the world were you supposed to inconspicuously keep your cool around the man you’ve been crushing on for months?! Especially since you were sharing a room?!
Sighing, you decide you should probably get your key as well, shifting your bags around, and approaching Aizawa who had your key in his hand.
Taking it from him with appropriate thanks, you turn around to leave, but you hear his voice, stopping you in his tracks.
“L/N.” he calls, and you look back at him confused.
“Yes, Sensei?” you ask warily, wondering what he could be asking you about.
“You might be wondering why you’re paired with Bakugou.” he paused, choosing his next words carefully. “We assigned rooms based on those who get along decently enough, and though Young Bakugou has most definitely mellowed out over the years, he seems to be the calmest around you.”
You feel your cheeks subconsciously heat up at the words, warmth spreading in your heart and butterflies erupting in your stomach. Did he really act that way?
No, he just likes you as a friend, you tell yourself, clearing your throat and looking at your teacher.
“I understand Sensei. I have no problem rooming with Bakugou-kun.” you smile reassuringly, and the man reciprocates with a wry smile of his own before dismissing you to your room.
“Go settle in, breakfast buffet closes at 12:30 tomorrow.” he says, grabbing his own suitcase and heading to his shared room with Vlad King.
You marvel the resort as you make your way to the elevator, ornate marbled floors the color of sea glass accented with gold. Two giant seashells the size of gargoyles stood at both sides of the elevator doors, and you step inside, soft classical music trickling through the space as you stare out the glass wall, observing the many people of the beach, and clear aquamarine waters that looked crystalline. It was...beautiful.
You hear a ding, marking your arrival to the 8th floor, where you and the rest of Class 1-A were sleeping, except for Tokoyami, who slept on the 7th floor alongside Class 1-B.
The floors were carpeted, a nice burgundy with simple gold waves that ran throughout the length of the hallway, simple, but elegant.
Trailing your eyes alongside the doors, you find the door you were looking for, Room 1076.
You fumble with the key card, pressing against the small black sensor by the door handle, hearing the beep that signaled it was unlocked, and you open it, taking in your surroundings.
There was a large painting of two seahorses, with their tails intertwined, hung in between the beds. The beds themselves were draped with such fancy comforters that looked like clouds, you almost didn’t want to sleep on them in fear of ruining it.
“Oi, close yer mouth, yer gonna catch flies.” you hear a familiar voice behind you, whipping around to come face to face with a pair of vermillion eyes.
“Oh Bakugou!” you laugh nervously “I didn’t see you there.”
He rolls his eyes, grabbing your backpack from your shoulders forcefully and plops it onto the nearby chair, effectively flinging you backwards in the process.
“Gah! Ah shit-” you yelp, falling backwards and losing your footing, only for strong arms to wrap around your waist and yanking you back just in time to narrow avoid breaking a very expensive looking vase.
Looking up you see Bakugou’s eyes on you, an impassive look on his face.
A few beats of silence pass before you burst out into laughter, Bakugou forced to shift your form in order to not have to fall over again from the ferocity of your heaving giggles.
“Pfft- you should’ve seen your face - you were like rahhhh and I was like AHHH” you rambled, finding it difficult to breathe as your muscles painfully stretched to accommodate how much you were smiling.
You feel a hand rest on top of your hand, effectively silencing you as Bakugou clicks his teeth impatiently.
“Tch- calm down dumbass, ya just got here and yer already trying ta destroy the place.” he grumbles, the tips of his ears turning red. “Aizawa said we can call up room service for free- let's order some dinner and watch a movie or some shit. I’m fuckin exhausted.”
You smile brightly, shoving down the butterflies that erupt in your stomach, and nod.
“Sounds good! You order and I’ll find something to put on.” you beam, flopping down on the bed closest to you, deciding that it was going to get messed up anyways. “Just don’t get anything too spicy. I’m not a weakling obviously, but you’re probably going to manage burning off my taste buds one way or another.”
Bakugou rolls his eyes again, flipping you off and receiving and indignant Hey! from you, walking over to the bedside table to dial room service on the provided phone.
Flipping through the channels, you surf through various news programs and sports broadcasts, already missing your easily accessible streaming services back home. Finally, you find a cheesy rom com you were familiar with, thankfully the timing was perfect, seeing as the movie’s opening credits roll through. The quality was surprisingly good, you thought happily to yourself, but given that you were staying in such a high-end resort, you shouldn’t be surprised.
You make yourself comfortable, mentally high fiving yourself for deciding to wear sweatpants and a t-shirt that morning, so you didn’t feel the need to change into your pajamas just yet.
Bakugou hangs up on the phone with a gruff salutation, sitting on his own bed adjacent to yours and raises his eyebrows at your choice of movie.
“This one? Really?” he asks, frowning slightly and you quirk up an eyebrow in return.
“It was all I could find, plus I know you like this one. You have the book copy of it you nerd.” you smile teasingly.
Bakugou’s ears turn red at the realization that you noticed his guilty pleasure of reading romance novels, chucking a pillow in your direction in retaliation.
“So what? Movie’s shit.”he grumbles, turning to watch the male lead being introduced. “S’true for all of em. Books are way better.”
You sigh, disgruntled as the pillow hits you in the face and falls off your bed out of reach. You did really want to throw it back at him, but right now, you were just too lazy.
“Stop being such a sourpuss.” you gripe, letting your arms dangle off the side of the bed as you lie on your stomach. “Obviously books are more accurate, but just try to enjoy a classic movie as if it were a standalone.”
The blonde sighs, making himself comfortable on his bed without another word, vermillion eyes locking themselves on the screen, just as the female lead complains to her best friend that her crush won’t like her back. He knew it was a dumb movie, just by looking at the male lead’s interactions with her, it was clear he was in love with her. Were people always so dense when it came to a guy’s feelings?
His eyes wander in your direction, watching you doze off , face half smushed against the edge of the bed. Sighing, he gets up, grumbling as he realizes his foot fell asleep, but works through the pain as he makes his way to your side, grabbing the remote and turning off the TV.
He places the remote on the bedside table and lifts you gently, adjusting the pillows and rearranging the comforter to safely tuck you in. However you weren’t fully asleep, your eyes blinking blearily as you weakly protest.
“No...not yet...” you mumble, frowning softly, and Bakugou resists the urge to smooth the cute crinkle between your furrowed eyebrows “Food’s going to waste...”
The blonde chuckles quietly, eyes softening as he tucks a strand of of loose hair away from your face. “S’not a problem dummy, I didn’t order anything. Knew ya were gonna pull this shit. We'll eat a big breakfast tomorrow.”
You nod sleepily in agreement, as he turns away to get ready for bed himself, only to be stopped by the feeling on your hand loosely wrapped around his wrist.
“Bakugou?”
“Yeah?”
“I love you.”
His cheeks are tinted red, clearly flustered, not that you noticed, too tired to pick up on really anything.
“I...”
“I love you too dumbass.”

I think what annoys me most about 5e's mainstream is that everything is filtered through the PHB Lens.
You watch a TV show and you'll always get "X is such a Y with Z levels in A" and it just makes my head spin. I don't get it. What are you saying? Literally, what IS the activity here? Is it a joke? A witty observation? Are you a D&DTuber now? Gonna make a build guide and DPR metric for James the gentle debate club president?
Of course he's a Bard with Rogue for Expertise, because D&D isn't built to model fucking modern day people who can't even hold a sword and attend debate club FUCK how vapid are you that instead of engaging with the media you're making the most banal, unrelated observation FROM ANOTHER MEDIUM? I'm trying to enjoy the fucking THEMES and CHARACTERS of this show!
I need better friends.
Oh I hear you, it is extremely annoying. Now, I don't think it's exclusive to 5e, because this shit was also going on during the 3e days, but I feel 5e's greater popularity has amplified it. Also I think it fucking sucks that even actual online gaming publications are in on this, doing whole "how to model character from this media in D&D 5e." It is fucking stupid and boring and asinine, especially when the media in question is an anime adaptation of a TTRPG property!
But you know I think this might be a general Fandom thing where people will start looking at things through the eyes of whatever fandom they are in, like it's blorbo from my shows except blorbo is the Sorcerer class from D&D, and I don't know if this is uncharitable of me but in general I feel that many people who approach media via a fandom lens are not very good at looking at media past the surface. This is why I feel engaging with anything as a Fan needs to be tempered at least somewhat by also being a Hater. It's good for the soul, because otherwise you end up with "D&D is actually queer media because there's a gay elf in it."

Eddie Munson x Reader
Both Eddie and the Reader are close to their 30's here.
A/N: I miss writing for Eddie so bad. I miss someone real, too. I don't want to spoil anything, but there's angst here. It's based in real events- I'm definitely projecting a little bit. Stay alert, you may have spent your wishes without realizing you did.
You look magical in white.
Eddie spent an ungodly number of nights picturing you in a white dress, and still he wasn’t prepared to see you like this. He suspects the dress isn’t what’s making his voice falter. Any wedding dress would look just as pretty on you. Especially if your eyes shine like that when you look at him.
Someone hands Eddie the microphone and he has to force his knees to stop shaking so he can stand. Your reassuring smile makes it a little easier. He makes an effort not to look around, to all the faces staring at him, and focuses on you. Eddie clears his throat, wincing when the micro amplifies the sound, and starts talking.
“Hello, everyone.”
He makes a pause. There’s no need to introduce himself, everyone here knows who he is. He feels silly, and wonders for a second how long it would take him to get to the door. But, again, you’re looking at him. So he straightens his back and stars talking again.
“As most of you know, I met my best friend when we were nine years old.”
He flashes you a smile, and then whispers loudly into the microphone.
“There’s one thing no-one knows, though- I kept this secret for twenty years. I was saving it for today. I didn’t even tell you!”
Eddie winks at you, trying to appease your curious expression. He’s glad he convinced you to let his speech be a surprise.
“Ready?”
The dramatic pause gives him confidence. This is just like one of his D&D campaigns. More or less.
“I remember the first time I saw you.”
He’s staring right at your bouquet now. It matches the flower in his lapel.
“It was the first day of school. Fourth grade. Early in the morning, t’was a little chilly. I was standing in the hallway. The bell rang, and I turned around. I don’t know why. I was headed the other way. But I turned around, and I saw her… You know how in the movies time slows down, and everyone but the protagonist becomes a blur?”
Eddie chuckles and nods.
“It was just like that. She looked like life revolved around her.”
His tone shifts to a lighter one.
“I have an active imagination, as you may know...”
The laughs all around the room make his shoulders relax a little.
“And she was gone in a second- seriously, like in the movies, the sea of people swallowed her and I was left wondering if I had imagined her.”
He smirks at you.
“Like I said, I have an active imagination.
Sometimes, I convince myself magic is real. That was one of those days. I made a wish- I wished the girl with bright eyes and wild hair I saw for a second was real.”
You’re blushing a little under that makeup, aren’t you? He thinks you are.
“I didn’t see her again that day… But I did spot her in class the next day.”
Eddie can’t help but beam at you. Your nine-year-old self was adorable, all round cheeks and nervous smiles.
“After that, it’s become easier to believe in magic. That’s why, when I saw her cry over a boy for the first time, I asked for a second wish.”
He dares a quick look around, and finds that every person in the room- including a waiter- is looking at him.
“She’s always been so brave. That’s one of the things I admire the most of you, you know? How you keep your heart open for everyone to see. How you tried over and over again to find love, even if you got hurt, even if it didn’t work.”
Your eyes look a little wet now. He pushes forward, trying to remember where he was going with this.
“I wished you’d find the person that would finally be able to love you the way you deserve.”
It’s getting hard to talk with the knot in his throat.
“Once again, I proved magic is real.”
Eddie has to wipe a very embarrassing tear out of his cheek.
“Everybody knows wishes come in groups of three. So, tonight, here, I’m making my last wish. I wish you the happiest of lives. I wish you a long, beautiful marriage. I wish you the life you’ve always wanted, full of the love you deserve.”
He can’t see much through the tears in his eyes- that will hopefully stay there for another two minutes- but he thinks you’re crying too. He raises his glass, hand full of silver rigs shaking, desperate to end this hell.
“To my best friend, the beautiful bride, and her newly acquired husband! To the first day of a very long, very happy marriage!”
You raise your glass with your left hand- the gold band mocking him- because the right is holding your now-husband’s hand. He smiles at Eddie, raising his glass and mouthing “Thank you, man”.
Eddie feels sick. He hands the microphone to one of your bridesmaids, who pats him on the back, and steps away from the table.
It’s hard to breathe. He’s staring at you, at your wide smile as you hug your mom. The DJ started playing a romantic pop song, and people are standing up. He knows he should stay for the first dance. But he’s looking at you, and you’re not looking at him. You’re drying happy tears with your husband’s handkerchief- who carries a fucking handkerchief anymore? – and beaming up at him.
Eddie keeps staring at you until the sea of wedding guests swallow your white dress, your ruined makeup and your bright, happy future.
He steps outside of the venue, full on sobbing now. His van awaits in the parking lot, ready for him to escape again. Out of the two of you, he always knew he was the coward one. Since the moment you declared your love for him- at barely nine years old you were brave enough to bring him chocolates and honesty. Eddie remembers your little hand, your heart open. He remembers his dirty nails, his feelings guarded behind years of abandonment and cruel jokes. Your sad eyes when he didn’t reply. His heavy chest when he kept being your friend, every day up until today.
Too busy wiping tears, Eddie misses a shooting star disappearing in the horizon. When he looks up, the sky is empty- just like his chest, his house, and his future- and he realizes he lied.
Eddie Munson does not believe in magic anymore.

FFVII Rebirth introduces something never extensively explored in the original game or in the compilation of Final Fantasy VII: Sephiroth's anger towards Professor Gast’s experiment and the contempt he came to harbor towards ShinRA as an organization.
(Herein lurk spoilers.)
While the latter is something the fans have glimpsed on and off throughout previous installments, the second part of the Remake amplifies it ever so more. What began as admitting that the company had fabricated his legend and expressing a desire to live a normal life in Ever Crisis gradually transforms into a lack of clarity regarding his reasons for fighting in Before Crisis (as prompted by Elfe), followed by an open disgust towards Hojo's and Hollander's experiments when confronted with Mako pod entities during the hunt for Genesis. Sephiroth and Zack's ordeal during Crisis Core events appears to undercut his willingness to stay, as he famously considers leaving the corporation right before embarking on the ill-fated Nibelheim expedition.
Tumblr media
FFVIIRb picks off where we left off, painting a more complete picture of Sephiroth's dissatisfaction with ShinRA overall. Interestingly, one of the discarded sequences from the original game featured Sephiroth hinting at his lack of affection for his employer as early as the truck ride.
Narratively, the sequence spans the gap between OG and Crisis Core's departure cutscene, implying that Sephiroth used the time on the road to reflect on his current and future connection with ShinRA. His companion, however, does not appear to understand why he is bringing the topic up. What distinguishes Rebirth is the suggestion that Sephiroth came to view the entire ShinRA system as a problem, rather than just a few rotten apples. He no longer singles out Hojo, but rather the entire ShinRA branch, indicating that something's wrong with the system. When "Cloud" casually inquires about the problem with the Nibelheim reactor, Sephiroth responds that it is "people who run it," adding that this particular site is controlled by the Research and Development department. In addition, in response to "Cloud's" fair comment regrading the lack of transparency in company's operation, he rather sarcastically suggests to bring the issue with the President, thus implicitly conveying the futility of the endeavor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When the party encounters Mako pod residents, one can detect genuine rage in his voice. While Sephiroth had previously shown bitterness for the test subjects during CC, it was tinged with disgust/pity rather than wrath. And once again, I’m grateful to Tyler Hoechlin for broadening his range in this particular segment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Cloud's" reaction to the contents of the pods, however, came off a little weird. The confusion appears out of place, because Zack had seen it all before — he had been there to watch the aftermath of Hollander's work; is it really odd that ShinRA's chief R&D scientist spearheaded the entire thing? Perhaps, unlike Sephiroth, Zack treated it as a rotten-apple issue, rather than a systemic issue. Or maybe this is an example of Cloud being an unreliable narrator, having conflated his own experience with that of Zack, which also explains Zack being sort of too green for the First Class throughout the Nibelheim portion of the game.
The shift in Sephiroth's perspective, from singling out Hojo's misdeeds to viewing ShinRA's itself as a systemic problem, is further highlighted during the mansion segment. This is no longer a strictly Hollander or Hojo issue. Human experimentation formed the fundamental core of what ShinRA is now, and those were approved from the very top. As Sephiroth puts it with barely concealed disgust, as soon as the company realized what had fallen into their hands, they became ambitious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The wording also strikes a contrast to how he used to refer to the company in the past; as such, when Angeal deserts, Sephiroth states that Angeal has betrayed “US”, which points at both his personal connection to the person and the fact that Sephiroth likely saw himself as part of ShinRA circle. In the library, however, he distances himself by referring to the company as THEM, thus no longer perceiving himself as a part of it.
Tumblr media
More important still is the rage he expresses when quoting excerpts from Gast's notes. The anger is new, never before seen touch. Sephiroth has been portrayed in the moment differently throughout earlier installments — dejected, perhaps overwhelmed, but never angry enough to snarl and nearly flip the table.
And it's wonderful. It's authentic, and it makes sense. It makes you question how much of that rage has been bottled up, compartmentalized, and never fully processed throughout the years. That rage should have existed, but was suppressed by ShinRA, before becoming internalized and sealed.
The scene is extremely on point on another level as well. As the flash of rage passes, and Sephiroth looks away, hiding eyes behind bangs — a gesture previously briefly appearing in Crisis Core.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One could interpret the body language as being ashamed and unwilling to show his composure cracking. Even in this state he KNOWS he wasn't supposed to let anyone see hurt or anger, wasn't supposed to lose cool. The "wonder child" and the "poster boy" is not to be seen as something other than “efficacious” and “collected”. The habit of suppressing displays of emotion or physical/psychological ailment had apparently become a part of himself. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to deduce why the habit persists. The internalized compulsion to live up to the expectations placed on him by ShinRA and the myth it imposed on his character, as well as the internalized imperative not to reveal to someone like Hojo — anyone— the extent to which their acts or words affect him. There's also another layer to this shame — one of being an artificial creation, but that's for another write up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The anger towards Gast differs greatly from the way Sephiroth went “Why didn't you tell me?” in previous iterations of the Nibelheim incident. In retrospect, Gast's supervision of the project, involvement in Sephiroth's life, and unexpected departure seem like a betrayal. Gast had not only abandoned Sephiroth, who had likely come to see him as a salient figure in his youth, but had also been lying to him all along, until finally discarding him, as Sephiroth might believe. Gast therefore falls from grace, becoming yet another person who misled, attempted to exploit, and eventually abandoned him to deal with the consequences on his own.

S O. What does social anxiety for König look like through your fantastic characterization then? 👀
(Love your Alone operator series btw. Got me on the edge of my seat with each chapter!!)
(Thank you!! 💚💚💚 I'm so glad you're enjoying :D you all have been so so sweet with it and Im over the MOON so many people have liked it)
To answer this question I'm going to have to be a biiig yapper and explain why I think of him the way I do
Going to say this to start, but I'm going with the true fact that König is indeed diagnosed with social anxiety - anything else I'm saying is based off of my personal interpretation of how he acts in game as a disclaimer
I'm also going to state that personally, the König I write is in his lower to mid 40's. Sorry not sorry, I don't see him as a young dude. Especially not when it's pretty much agreed upon that he's a colonel. So he's had a SIGNIFICANT amount of life experience, and a significant amount of time to work on himself and have introspection.
To me, it makes the most sense that he was diagnosed with social anxiety earlier on in his childhood since it was significantly more obvious when he was younger. Something that severe wasn't unnoticed by those around him because some of them did care about him. It's also stated he's suffered from severe social anxiety throughout his life so that's how I took it.
I personally go with he grew up in a more rural town in his homeland of Austria, which meant there weren't exactly others around during the first few years. "Go play with the neighbors kids" didn't really work when there weren't neighbors around. It was mainly him and his parents and an occasional relative over.
What could be brushed off as initial shyness clearly couldn't be anymore when he finally was enrolled in school.
Even on the first day when it's "introduce yourself to everyone", he fucked that up so monumentally it'll be engraved forever in his hall of shameful memories that he thinks about late at night. School was an utter nightmare, quite frankly, from moment one. The whole situation was too much, too stressful, and too different from the life he had at home. He flat out refused to get up and present in front of the class and wouldn't talk in group projects just for the fear of embarrassing himself. At that time, he was hitting all the indicators for social anxiety like they're the targets he shoots at today.
He missed out on a lot of interaction with other kids initially because of how awkward he was - and having any form of anxiety never helps in social situations. Talking to others wasn't something that came naturally and his own panic amplified it tenfold. Most times, he'd either pretend he didn't hear them, avoid them, or stray as far to the edge of the group as possible to avoid it. Unfortunately this made him an easy target because kids are RUTHLESS and turned him into even more outcast as well which only worsened it.
School always sucked for him due to that, despite the fact that he was a smart kid. No amount of smarts could save you from social persecution when you had nearly no social skills to boot. [ side note but I'm dying on the hill that he's incredibly intelligent and has a bachelors degree (at the very least)].
His parents kept him in therapy to help him manage because without it, he'd be back at square one refusing to go to school and faking a cold just to get out of it. And of course, therapy is a very important tool when it comes to healing, coping, and managing severe mental disorders. The whole reason why he doesn't show such bad anxiety anymore is because he kept the skills he learned and applies them so much that it becomes his second nature.
He's had at least 35 years of this, he's good enough to mask and to keep up his facade.
Another part of why he doesn't show it nearly as much is because he joined the military and was thrown through the wringer with it. Being bullied for so long was a major motivator for joining in the first place, as he needed something to get away from the peers who tormented him so and he needed a new life where he wasn't known as target #1. But he ALSO wanted to gain actual confidence and more certainty in himself.
Joining the military really means you're not left with such things as many choices when it comes to anxiety in social situations. You're forced into quarters with others, have to work side-by-side, do nearly everything together, so on and so forth. He knew that going in but at that point for him it was like extreme exposure therapy, the last step he needed to really put everything he learned in therapy to work.
That doesn't mean he didn't suffer or loved it. No, it was terrible, intense, and nerve-wracking. But he wouldn't have done it otherwise if he didn't want that. Being in the military didn't give him the leeway to avoid what made him anxious, it taught him to face it head on and fight.
Now that he's up there in age and has considerable more experience (and leeway with having a higher rank), the ways he expresses it [look at me finally answering the question] are more subtle.
On the field, you're likely not going to notice it. Because that's him turning the little auto pilot switch in his mind to on when he has a job. The job is his focus and everything has been so engrained in his mind that it's muscle memory. He's, quite frankly, focused on not dying and getting any job done over himself. The joking you often hear him do and taunting alike is part of how he's expressing the confidence he feels when he's in his element, when he KNOWS what he is doing.
If you look closely or approach him off the field, however, it's another story. He usually tenses or straightens himself out when people approach and will hold that until they leave (unless they're someone who he truly knows). Many assume that's a taught habit of the military, but that's only half-true. He did that before then.
Unlike when he's working, he doesn't have a guide or things he knows he has to do in a specific order to best ensure survival - no matter how much talking to other people feels like the heat of the battle, you can't (legally) solve it with a gun or throw a frag and book it out of there. There's no true guide to social interactions and that stresses him out. There's no manual, no field guide, no ten step card on how to successfully navigate them.
He knows things that are normal to say, he knows sometimes what he should say - it's just a matter of finding the phrasing and how to say them. Yet it seems like whenever someone doesn't follow his pre-programmed line of thought when it comes to their talking, his mind can shut down and go blank as he stares, trying to figure out where to go or what to say (spoiler: it usually doesn't end well).
He's usually awkward to talk to because he's running over everything in his head as he tries to think of what best to say to avoid further interactions or ones that could be more targeting to him. And, as mentioned, he lacks the average set of social skills that plenty learn in childhood because he didn't have that proper socialization. He's also still not the best at talking itself and can be blunt and to-the-point, which also doesn't usually go down well.
Not to mention, he's bad at small talk and has a terrible, sarcastic sense of humor that many can't read and it quickly turns things uncomfortable very fast because everyone takes him seriously. It never helps he usually doesn't explain himself all too well, usually leaving it as is as he secretly wishes he didn't talk at all when mortification sets in. Hurrying away with an excuse of some paperwork or something else to busy himself is his go-to after those.
When possible, he'll avoid small-talk and greatly prefers gestures instead. Someone who can appreciate his greater need for silence and a lack of talking is someone who he will greatly appreciate in turn. He's a firm believer that not all silences are uncomfortable and sometimes, it IS best not to say anything at all.
Due to his childhood too, he's not really fond of being around many people and will do his best to avoid it. Unless he has to grin and bare it, he won't. He finds his mind calmest when he can just be himself without having to worry about saying the right things to appease others or to be friendly. That way he can focus on what he wants, think how he wants, and feels how he wants without second guessing himself or having to worry about existing.
He's going to avoid most public settings when possible. Though he can now suitably manage his anxiety, they're something he passes up on. Grocery store trips are something he does maybe once a week or two, if that - stock piling so he has to go to the store less is his usual strategy. Anything he can do himself, he WILL do himself, if he doesn't have a trusted person who can do it better or can help.
Notably, he also doesn't have many friends. He's like talking to a brick wall and unless you're considerably persistent and understanding of his need for space, you won't get far. A lot of people don't have the time nor patience for it, but if you do get close to him, he does come out of his shell. He appreciates anyone who cares enough to actually get close to him and get to know him despite how awkward he can be, and will be loyal to the end because of that.
Another side effect is that he doesn't sleep well. Between the massive amounts of trauma from his job and the trauma from his childhood, he doesn't sleep well as is. But the social anxiety aspect comes into play because many nights, his mind is rerunning all the interactions he's had as he chronically overthinks them. He always wonders what he could've done, how he could've improved, and what they're thinking of him (even if they're someone he may never run into again). Its very hard for him to shut his mind off and doing such usually requires him drowning everything else and making himself not think about that, or anything, any more.
[Another side note: He's an avid reader. Reading gives him new things to think about and can help put him to sleep, especially before bed. It's a good way for him to stop thinking about whatever was nagging him and shifts his mind into thinking about other things he enjoys instead)
Basically, IN SHORT this isn't my full in-depth detailed characterization of exactly who I think he is - the reason he's not presenting it as an anxious ball of pure energy who is so uwu shy and soft is because he is incredibly well-managed with his severe social anxiety at his age and that's uh, just not him. Social anxiety doesn't mean he's a blubbering mess or will cry at the slightest inconvenience and reducing him to that or treating anyone with social anxiety like they're a child because of it does not help at alllll.
He's had extensive therapy for this, he's got his methods, he can mask very well. He's a WHOLE GROWN MAN who is responsible for not only his actions but how he manages his emotions and he knows it. But if you know him and know what to look for, you'll be able to pick it up.
(Also the sheer amount of scenarios I've seen where people think he just would... cry if you took his mask off??? Him???? HIM???? König, "I can make you talk, where are they?" the skilled PMC operator? That one? That guy? Yeah no, anyone dumb enough to do that better have signed their will prior or hopefully has an intensive love for scrubbing all the floors with a single old toothbrush. He won't tolerate people harassing or hustling him or pressing on his nerves. Sure, it reminds him of his childhood bullies, but quite frankly that behavior as grown adults trying that is RIDICULOUS, it pisses him off and immediately lowers his opinion on them.)
To whoever made it this far, I hope this made sense, I took melatonin before I got the ask so I'm in another realm right now LMAO. König is one of my favorites and was the first character I realllly really loved and I just hate seeing him done so dirty. Especially as someone with severe social anxiety myself, it irritates me when it's portrayed just so... wrong and quite frankly, in a lazy, offensive manner lacking any nuance especially in relation to the character who has it. Like just making him stutter and cry isn't all social anxiety is and there's SO much depth and things to work with despite the... actual substance as far as his bio goes

nothing, and i mean NOTHING can get me to hate s classes world building. geunseo reveals so much random details that make sense concerning the whole rpg thing and I'm here for it.
the concepts of stuff like awakening, ranks, inventories, gear, are all explained to a certain degree that makes you think: yes, that does indeed seem possible.
the fact that one can awaken not only to combat aptitude but according to their inner talents/nature and get related skills is one part and it seems believable. in fact, the rpg like system is but an assistant that shows people their inner talents that are brought out in their skills, but awakening itself is just a natural occurrence. the system isn't perfect and it can't fully draw out your true nature, so you have to become proficient in your skills and grow familiar with them, because at their core, those are basically your own abilities, but amplified.
the fact that one awakening is related to their physique is also a great detail. it's a commonly known fact in sctir universe that a lot of athletes awaken at minimum at d-e rank because they're trained and have good stamina and strength. two of the s rank guild leaders in korea are formel athletes. and the fact that "i hope your whole team awakens" is an insult just makes the world feel alive and real, because people would 100% say that. and also that awakeners can't play sports like they used to because they're simply this much stronger than unawakened athletes adds to it.
the next detail i really like is that one can grow in sctir (I'm looking at you solo leveling). because really, people can change and grow and it's only natural. someone starts up great, someone has to climb to that point, and even an f rank can become a transcendent if they work for it. in fact, a lot of earlier transcendents grew up like that, with their own effort. and the system assigning ranks is both a good thing and a bad thing, because it makes people realise the talents they have as skills, but it makes people think they can't break free of their rank, even though they can through effort.
inventories still lowkey feel weird to me, but i think geunseo did a good job trying to make them something regular and explain it to some extent. the size in the inventory is individual to everyone depends on the rank. the fact that one can't access someone else's inventory because this is their space. sealing the inventory is possible with curses (which is a whole industry in sctir that feels like it could be a thing based on how people could use them) and inventory sealing bracelets and the like are wide spread because they're very convenient. regular items can't fit in the inventory (ig this is because of mana or something? since earth doesn't really have much mana so the items from it don't contain much, and dungeon items are full of it), but a lot of regular items are getting made out of dungeon byproducts, since even an f rank has an inventory and it's really convenient.
the whole thing about new industries rising is also a very believable thing. companies that deal with dungeon products, health institutions, research labs, construction companies, insurance companies, they all ultimately thrive off of dungeons. dungeons also a great way to deal with waste and people actually do that, and the mana stones are a good source of energy that people also begin switching too. and this brings me to possibly my favourite thing in sctir world building. that little comment hyj makes that if a hunter is found dead in america, and there are obvious suspects, 11 out of 10 fingers will point at OPEC. this little bit is actually so genius, because yes. oil people wouldn't like it if their big and whealthy pockets suddenly started getting less bucks in them. so they wouldn't like mana stones, that are a good source of evergy with no side effects, and they wouldn't like hunters who are basically trying to take their bread away, because they spent so much time and effort getting those high positions for themselves.
same goes for governments. i think the thing about agreeing not to use hunters in wars is a bit forced, but it also makes sense because outwardly, most countries would agree to it to keep their image and because they realise that everyone would be fucked. but it didn't mean they wouldn't actually use underhanded methods and work in the shadows. because modern military equipment is ultimately not as strong as people whose arrows blow up, who can freeze a human from inside, and who can crush a highly armored tank with their pinkie finger. thankfully in sctir world people usually don't perfect stealth skills which makes it easier for geunseo to not focus on politics too much. that, however, doesn't mean they don't do that. and there are bad sides to it too, because people can exploit other people in new ways. the low ranking hunters signing basically slave contracts, awakened people, and even children, being sold off, monsters being used as rare pets, all of this also unfortunately makes the world feel more alive. because there will always be people with screwed moral compases doing everything for their own gain.
this post is a bit all over the place, but i can talk all day about how great the world building in sctir is. how almost everything feels like it could be a thing and how it's all explained.
still, as much as i like the novel, there are still things that aren't perfect. one of them is the fact that hyj was absolutely stoned before regression like why-
i mean the fact that hyj asked to be brought to the point right before he awakened, which brought him to the time before he visited the brokers, but later on it's said that he went to the awakening center as soon as it opened and that he awakened there and suffered from it a lot. so why did he get back to the time before meeting the brokers? plot reasons? idk really, i should probably reread it later

Audio has been a solved issue for decades. I own a 1976 Sony TA-3650 amplifier. It's a powerful class-A solid state amplifier with very low (under 0.1%) distortion while pushing 55w per channel. It's great. I have absolutely no need to upgrade, my turntable (also a vintage mid-70s Sony model) sounds great hooked in through it, and it has an aux channel so I can hook up a CD player or my old DAP for streaming my music collection. If anything, it's maybe a little too powerful. When the -20dB switch isn't engaged it gets apartment shaking loud with the volume knob barely turned up. It's also so goddamn heavy that when I needed to have it serviced it was too unwieldy to lug around on public transit so I had to hail a cab. It's power inefficient, and it's massive. A modern class-D amplifier does everything my Sony does in a package that is a fifth the size and a tenth the weight. That modern amp is also much less expensive. In 1976 the Sony TA-3650 retailed for the equivalent of $2750 in today's dollars. You can get a fantastic, audiophile grade Fosi phono preamp and amplifier pair for around $300.
Speakers are a solved issue too, with DSP it's trivial to tune the tweeters and woofers to have fantastic crossover. This used to be exceptionally difficult to achieve and had to be done via a complex series of transistors and circuits and careful part selection. Woofers are better, tweeters are better, materials science has come a long way. As soon as you leave the "shitty wireless Bluetooth speaker" tier of the market it's easy to find stuff that sounds good. Look up a few YouTube reviews for the pair of "budget" speakers I use as my desktop monitors, the Edifier r1700s. People rave about just how good these things are (and not "fantastic for the price" but "fantastic period") and they cost less than $200. Ditto for headphones, if you really want to spend the money buy a pair of Sennheiser HD 650s for $600, treat them well, and never buy another pair of headphones again in your life. I don't like open-back headphones though, so I'll stick with the excellent Shure SRH-840As (which are $400 cheaper to boot). And meanwhile in IEM land, you can get really fuckin' good IEMs for $30 from one of the Chi-fi manufacturers. The 7hz Zero2s are exceptionally good, well tuned, single driver IEMs that retail for around $30. I bought Cate a pair and she loves them. I just wish they'd stop putting waifus on their packaging.
The guys who spend thousands and thousands of dollars on audio equipment that costs less than the equipment used to record the music they're listening to are genuinely the dumbest motherfuckers on the planet.
